Territorial Restrictions

Georgia is a fantastic travel destination with stunning natural wonders and breathtaking landscapes. However, it's crucial to be aware that some areas in Georgia have restricted access and are not covered by any insurance. To ensure your safety, you must avoid visiting the following places:

  • Rental cars are prohibited from being driven into South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as these territories are outside of Georgian government control, and any insurance coverage does not apply.

  • The “Mestia - Ushguli - Lentekhi” road runs through a mountainous area with many steep and dangerous slopes. It is strictly prohibited to drive a rental car there.

  • The “Akhaltsikhe - Batumi” road running through the Goderdzi Pass and the “Sairme - Abastumani” road are simply poor-quality roads that even locals try to avoid.

  • Driving is not allowed in the regions of Truso, Juta, Vashlovani, Tusheti, Omalo, and Shatili.

  • Georgia On Wheels does not allow cross border rentals at this time.

Parking, Traffic Rules & Fines

Georgia's traffic rules are very similar to international standards, making driving relatively easy here. However, be aware of the winding mountain roads and reckless drivers who often disregard traffic regulations. Georgia has numerous speed cameras and traffic officers, and they enforce the law equally for locals and foreigners. To avoid fines, it's crucial to follow the traffic rules.

In Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi, parking requires payment, whereas other cities may have different arrangements. To pay for parking, use a bank terminal and place the receipt on your dashboard.

The parking attendants in reflective vests are not affiliated with any parking company and are not liable for your vehicle's safety. They offer assistance in parking and manage parking spaces on a voluntary basis. If you find their help useful, you may choose to leave a tip, but it's not obligatory.

If during rental period you violate any parking or traffic laws, you are obliged to compensate the amount of fine. Police-issued traffic fines must be paid by Georgian law before departure from the country. We do not charge any fees for traffic violations, except for drinking and driving. If you're caught driving under the influence, you'll face a 6-month license suspension, police will confiscate your vehicle, and Georgia On Wheels will charge you a 500 EUR penalty. The legal blood alcohol limit in Georgia is 0.3 promilles.
